Question by SheDrums88: What are some inexpensive ways to lose weight?
I’m 21 years old, and when I was pregnant with my son I gained a little over 90 lbs. This was 2 years ago, and I’m still really struggling to lose the weight. My weight will fluctuate up or down about 10 lbs. at a time, but it always settles back in the same range of where I’m at.
Everyone I’ve asked always just says “eat healthier, join a gym, and buy weight loss supplements”…but this advice does me no good. My situation is more complicated than that.
I left my son’s father about 8 months ago because he was abusive. As of yet, he’s not making his child support payments, which leaves both my son and I a budget of about $ 600 a month to live off of. After bills are paid, I’m left with about $ 50 of spending money for the month. Add in the cost of diapers, and I’ve got about $ 20 to $ 30 left to spend.
I live in a very small town, and the only gym in town has a $ 60 monthly fee, so that’s not an option. I can’t afford to buy a stroller, so taking my son for runs or long walks is out. I can’t afford exercise equipment for at home, and I definitely can’t afford to join a program like Weight Watchers or South Beach Diet. Expensive bottles of pills are also not a luxury that I can afford.
On top of all of that, healthy foods here in small town Minnesota are very expensive. Fresh fruits and vegetables are insanely costly, and even simple switches from store brand white bread (89 cents) to whole grain wheat bread ($ 3.49) really add up and become very hard on my budget.
What’s a girl to do?

You do not need a gym to get healthy.
As always, diet and exercise are the key.
As for diet, try eating 6 smaller meals a day with a protein shake for breakfast and lunch. A single serving of fruit for mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack. Dinner should be a sensible meal- minimize rice and breads. Try this for a two-week period. Then, vary your meals accordingly.
Workouts should have weights and circuit type of training. Free weights are great for toning and weight-loss. You can try dumbbell squats with shoulder presses. Here is a great and effective circuit training on a track field. Walk for 2 minutes (as a warm-up), jog for 2 minutes, run hard for a minute, then jog for 2 minutes, run hard for a minute, etc…do this for about 20-23 minutes. This works great.
By the way, do not be a slave to scale. Check the mirror also. It will show results.
This is just a start. Keep working out and eating properly.
Good Luck.
